She's sporting some floral ankle-foot orthoses (AFOs) to help align her legs and feet in a position that is less stressful on her joints and that will foster a more efficient walking pattern. Her physical therapist, Lisa, said that many people with Down syndrome sway and shuffle when they walk, and that this is often from weakness and habit associated with inefficiencies developed early in the walking process. It is her belief that this is preventable by training the muscles and joints to move better, and these braces are meant to help with that. We love Lisa!
Grace has adjusted very well to these braces. Her walking is much steadier and she often initiates putting them on in the morning.
The biggest challenge is finding the right knee highs for every occasion. That, and looking the other way at the cute girly shoe displays. Thank goodness she has the wardrobe and charisma to pull off K-Swiss sneaks with any look.
Stay tuned for the next accessory....glasses!
