As a physical therapist, I have written "WNL", or within normal limits, many times in patients' charts. I never really gave it much thought as I wrote it.
Today, we were on the receiving end of this statement. We are parents of a daughter whose hearing was just tested to be within normal limits for a 10-month old. And boy, does this phrase take on completely new meaning! After 4 failed newborn hearing screens, 1 inconclusive ABR test, 2 inconclusive hearing booth tests, 8 tympanometry tests that showed "stiff eardrums", 2 ear tubes placed and thousands of dollars spent because no one seems to be in network in this field...we found out what we've suspected all along, she has normal hearing. We also were told that her anatomy is unique (sound familiar heart surgery followers?) and that it's possible that this is the reason for all the inconclusive tests.
We now continue to be followed by ENT every 3-4 months until her tubes fall out, and then hopefully we can cross that off the list of regularly visited docs. In the meantime, I will be celebrating with all of my patients every muscle and joint that tests within normal limits.
As you can imagine, Lil' WNL was beyond excited.
