SuperGrace visited her 3rd hospital in three months to get her ear tube surgery this morning. It was an early rise, with roles reversed as we woke Grace up before she was ready to open her eyes for once. (Of course, it was before we wanted to wake as well, so no satisfaction there.)
Despite her fluid-filled ears, Grace listened intently to us as we prepped her for the procedure - it's amazing how focused she is when we're telling her about her health care. Little wise soul. Then she looked at us with amusement as we put on our O.R. floor jumpsuits and hair nets. We also had fun with them and snapped up a bunch of pictures before we realized perhaps we should be a little more serious since our daughter was about to get surgery. After going through open heart surgery, everything else seems a little less daunting.
As you can see, Grace is embarrassed by our picture-taking
Can you blame me?
I wasn't spared
We had heard that this surgery was easy, but didn't know much more than that. From the time we handed her off to the anesthesiologist to the time the surgeon came in to tell us we could head to the recovery room, it was 25 minutes. In these 25 minutes, she was put under general anesthesia and the surgeon made small holes in both of her ear drums to insert the tubes. Apparently, she was challenging and took a little longer than normal because her ear canals are so tiny. That's our Gracer, always giving the surgeons a little extra challenge with her GraceAnatomy. This is the size of the tubes she had placed:
Grace woke up about 15 minutes after we joined her in the recovery room, smiling and hungry. Since coming home, we've been trying out different sounds and voices to see how she responds. Poor Grace, first the photo humiliation above and now dealing with mom and dad's singing. She does seem to be turning to us more quickly when we talk to her. Is it too much to hope that she'll be saying "mama" by tomorrow?

Good work, L'il G. Don't worry...Pudge would assure you you're still entitled to as much selective listening as you like. Hope they work wonders for you, Little Bit!
ReplyDeleteGrace, another historical event has been added to your little life and it has been documented, thanks to Mom and Dad. We pray that this surgery will be very successful and soon you will be saying, "Mommy" and "Daddy". As parents you can't wait until your children start talking and then as time goes by, sometime you wish they would learn how to be quiet. Just wait and see - "I told you so."
ReplyDeleteThere is always hope right:) Way to be calm and relaxed about this one! Can't wait to hear all about her hearing now!
ReplyDeleteGrace, you give us all encouragement in the way you take all that God hands you with GRACE. Can't wait to get updated on your progress of hearing your Mom and Dads voices...Praying great Blessing to you all. ...K & J..
ReplyDeleteThat is great, Helen has had 3 sets of tubes and they all worked out great for her.
ReplyDeleteEllen
I'm so happy that everything went well!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to read this today as Reagan is going in for her tubes on Wed. Like you said it seems like not a big deal after open heart, but still I'm a little nervous. So she started making more sounds right away? I hope that's how it goes for Reagan.
