We always knew that our Grace was one of a kind. Her hair alone tells us that. We've all seen how unique her heart is in its capacity to reach out to people all over the world, but today it was confirmed by a top-notch surgeon. Dr. Spray met with us to let us know the repair went well. He led, however, with the fact that her little Grace Anatomy was very unique. In fact, the anatomy of both defects was the only of each of their kind that he's seen in his 30 years of practice. The details of this are a little lost on the non-cardiology trained person: she had 2 holes on the right side of her heart, something very unusual for an AV canal defect, and 2 holes within her pulmonary valve, something very unusual for a Tetralogy of Fallot. This made his job harder, and made it clear to us that we chose the right surgeon.
As to the specifics we asked you to focus your intentions on:
1. Her heart rhythms are working well, so it is most likely that she will NOT need a pacemaker.
2. Because she's sporting an Original Grace designer heart, the 2 valves were trickier to repair. He feels confident that they are working well, but said there is a small amount of overflow still between the right and left sides of the heart. This is so small that he believes this will close itself as she grows. (Let's hope and pray for that!)
3. Her pulmonary valve was fully salvaged and left intact!
You guys are good! Thank you so much!
We are gathering our legs back under us so that we can soon go see our beauty.

ReplyDeleteOh, bless that sweet surgeon and his patience and skill in unscrambling the Rubik's Cube in Gracer's chest. Pudge is a graduated member of the backflow club...fingers are crossed that as the rest of Grace grows those valves will follow suit and fix the problem like Pudger's did.
